Ohio Senators Sherrod Brown and J.D. Vance are pushing to make the Youngstown-Warren Regional Airport a primary airport.

The senators introduced bi-partisan legislation that would designate the airport as a primary spot, which would allow the airport access to funding from the Federal Aviation Administration's Airport Improvement Program.

In a statement, Senator Brown said that the designation would help improve the efficiency and affordability of the airport, so it can serve as a reliable option for air travelers in the Mahoning Valley.

"Youngstown-Warren Regional Airport is strategically located for Youngstown-area businesses and visitors to easily access the greater northeast Ohio region and highlights how important the Mahoning Valley is to our state and our economy," said Senator Brown

"We are thrilled with the bipartisan support from Senators Brown and Vance for the primary airport designation, which would significantly boost the Youngstown-Warren Regional Airport's growth and development," said Executive Director of Western Reserve Port Authority Anthony Trevena.

YNG is the only airport that has an Air Reserve Station but does not have active commercial air service. Last week, U.S. Representatives Bill Johnson and Dave Joyce introduced companion legislation.
