Crews began work on Youngstown's 20 Federal Place Thursday.

Workers began taking down an awning on the front of the building as they start renovations on the sixth and seventh floors.

The city received a $6.9 million remediation grant with a completion deadline of June 30th of this year.

The estimated cost of the total 20 Federal Place project is hovering around $96 million dollars. The city has also applied for a historical tax credit which could earn the project anywhere from $5-8 million. If the city is successful in earning that, there will be an additional $10 million given at the federal level.

20 Federal was once the Strauss Department for store decades until 1986 and then the Pharmor drugstore in 1988.
