Rulli introduces legislation mandating regular inspections, maintenance of school doors

Ohio Senator, Michael Rulli has introduced legislation that would enhance school security by mandating regular inspections and maintenance on school doors.
Senator Rulli tells 21 News the Ohio Childhood Safety Act would require school doors to meet the same standards at those deemed "secured facilities" by the Ohio Revised Code such as hospitals.
These codes include doors that could deny entry or exit to unwanted intruders, as well as making sure fire inspectors inspect the doors twice a year to make sure everything is up to code.
These regulations would minimize the risk of injury or death in the event of a fire, intruder or active shooter situation.
"How many of us have gone to work, gone to school and suddenly get a text or an automated phone call telling us about a lockdown or active shooter incident at our children's school? I want parents across Ohio to know that my colleagues and I have heard the calls to do something and this is a critical way to do something that keeps an attacker from getting in the classroom," Rulli said.
Rulli says he does not want this to be funded by the state, but does say there's a grey area with this due to Ohio Governor, Mike DeWine proposing $98 million in school safety funds for Ohio's budget.
Senator Rulli tells 21 News he has "every intention" to meet with Governor DeWine to discuss this.
"I'm in my fourth-and-a-half year [in the Senate] and if I'm being honest, this is the most important thing I've ever done," Rulli said.
