Troopers use spikes to stop wrong-way driver after chase through Trumbull, Mahoning Counties
A woman is in the Trumbull County Jail accused of leading State Troopers on a chase after allegedly driving the wrong way along Interstate 80.
According to the Ohio State Highway Patrol, Troopers began chasing a Mercedes Benz SUV along the interstate near Belmont Avenue just before 1 a.m. Tuesday.
The patrol says the SUV made a U-turn, and headed westbound on 80, onto Route 11 South.
As other police agencies joined the pursuit, the patrol placed spikes along Route 11, which flattened the SUV's tires.
The SUV came to a stop at the Route 224 interchange in Canfield.
The driver, who troopers identified as 47-year-old Rachel Benton of Poland, was jailed on charges of failure to comply, fleeing and eluding and other misdemeanor charges according to OSP.
She was arraigned in the Girard Municipal Court Tuesday morning.
Benton’s dog that was in the SUV during the chase, has been turned over to the dog warden.
The patrol says the pursuit lasted about fifteen minutes.
