Valley Christian cancels classes following shooting death of student
Following the shooting death of a student in Youngstown over the weekend, Valley Christian Schools is canceling classes.
Fifteen-year-old Amya Monserrat, who was killed at Martha's Boulevard Tavern Saturday night was a student there.
A notice from Valley Christian Administration to parents says the school will be closed on Monday, April 16th, in order to prepare staff to handle students' emotional needs.
The school will have an early dismissal Tuesday for grief counseling. Wednesday will return to a normal schedule, but grief counseling will continue through at least the rest of the school year.
Police say the shooting happened shortly before 11 p.m. Saturday, as a birthday party was wrapping up. At some point, a person pulled a gun and began firing. Monserrat was struck and killed in the crossfire.
