The Springfield Local School District Board of Education hired a new leader at its Tuesday meeting.

The board voted to hire incoming Superintendent Rachael Smith, who will take over when current Superintendent Tom Yazvac retires in September.

Smith has 26 years of experience in education including 23 years in educational administration. She has previously served as a teacher, principal, curriculum supervisor and in other roles in school districts throughout the Mahoning Valley.

Smith is a 1998 Youngstown State University graduate and earned a Master of Science in Education from YSU in 2001.

Her experience includes serving as the superintendent at Youngstown Community School, as Director of Special Services for the Campbell City School District and as Curriculum Supervisor and building principal in the Youngstown City Schools.
