Mill Creek Park is still trying to bounce back after two high winds storms.

“We usually experience some level of damage … but this one, the number was pretty staggering in terms of damage that we received,” Justin Rogers, Mill Creek Park Director of Planning and Operations said.

Downed trees blocked several roads and caused closures of some facilities in the Newport Wetland area and the North Recreation facility.

“We had to address approaching 200 trees that either blocked access to or use of those various facilities,” Rogers said.

Rogers said the parks didn’t have much flooding during either storm but more downed trees forced the Par 3 Golf Course to not open on its expected date of April 1.

“That first storm that came through, we had about 18 plus trees go down,” Aaron Hochmann, Recreation Manager of the course said.

The fallen trees took out some of the course's fences and power lines - causing them to lose power that still hasn't been restored.

Before crews could clean up the damage from the first storm, the second round rolled in.

“(It) took down about five or so more trees and that caused a little bit more cleanup, more delay in course opening,” Hochmann said about the second storm.

More than a dozen staff members have been working around the clock to get the course up and running.

“We are pretty much near the end. The course is in the process of being prepped and ready to go,” Hochmann said. “We’re hoping to get it open sometime next week.”

Until the Par 3 Course opens golfers can play at the Mill Creek’s Main Course.
