The Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV) will be issuing refunds to disabled veterans who were erroneously charged for specialty license plates that should have been provided at no charge.

The BMV recently determined it did not implement a change in Ohio's law that allows for certain disabled veterans to receive up to two free disabled veteran and/or military license plates.

This law specifically applies to veterans with a service-connected disability who are declared 100% disabled by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. The law does not apply to personalized specialty disabled/military license plates.

The BMV estimates that nearly 2,000 individuals were wrongfully charged for these license plates, as well as fees and taxes since the law went into effect back in 2019.

The average refund will be about $60, but the amount of each refund will vary based on local fees and taxes. Refunds should be processed within the next month.

Ohio BMV Registrar, Charlie Norman says the BMV "deeply regrets" this error and it is undertaking an internal investigation to determine why this change wasn't implemented in a timely manner.
