Prison sentence handed down to man who ran into Warren daycare during police chase
A Warren man who was arrested in a daycare center as children inside screamed has been sentenced to prison.
Trumbull County Common Pleas Court Judge Ronald Rice on Thursday sentenced 40-year-old Lamar Mitchell to six-and-a-half to eight years behind bars. Assistant Prosecutor Gabe Wildman tells 21 News Mitchell received the mandatory minimum sentence.
Mitchell, 40, pleaded guilty earlier to charges of domestic violence, failure to comply with a police order, failure to stop after an accident, aggravated menacing, and resisting arrest.
Mitchell's November 2 arrest was captured on video showing an officer with his Taser drawn chasing Mitchell into the Precious Times Child Care Center on North Park Ave. NW.
Police say Mitchell had been running after crashing his car near Washington St. NE when he fled from a traffic stop moments earlier.
According to police, Mitchell forced his way through a rear door of the daycare center as an employee walking back into the daycare center was attempting to shut the door.
Officers followed Mitchell through same doorway, saying he raised his hand towards the officers and threatened to “shoot” them.
After an officer made an unsuccessful attempt to use a Taser on Mitchell, the video shows him leaping into an enclosed play area where several toddlers were playing.
In the video, you can hear screaming children and the shouts of concerned adults who removed them from the play area as police subdued Mitchell.
