City of Sharon gets state grant to demolish former Huntington Bank building

 The City of Sharon has received a state grant that will go towards the demolition of the former Huntington Bank building and the redevelopment of that area.

The $345,000 Local Share Grant comes from Pennsylvania's Local Share Account Program, which is funded through the PA Race Horse Development and Gaming Act that uses gaming revenue for public interest projects.

The former Huntington Bank building is a five-story structure that was built in the late 1960s.

The City bought the building from Huntington last year after Huntington closed its Sharon office in January 2021.

Demolishing the Huntington building is part of a bigger plan to create a public recreation space next to the Shenango River in downtown Sharon.

“The grants Rep. (Parke) Wentling (R-7) and I worked to secure will promote business and tourism growth, not only for Sharon but all of Mercer County,” Senator Michele Brooks (R-50) said. “It’s great to see investments coming back to the district that will make it an even better place to live and work.”

The demolition of the building should be complete by June.
