The Mahoning County Grand Jury has issued a new indictment adding a rape charge to a 25-year-old man accused of killing his ex-girlfriend in Austintown this past October.

The superseding indictment was issued Thursday in the case of Steve Green III, who was originally charged with aggravated murder with firearm specifications, murder with firearm specifications tampering with evidence and domestic violence.

The new indictment also adds charges of attempted rape and extortion.

Green has been held in the county jail on $1 million bond since his arrest in October.

Police say Green shot his ex-girlfriend, Ashley Lockhart. Austintown Police told 21 News that the two had been together for a few years and the incident was supposedly related to a dispute between relationship issues and their child.

According to Austintown Police, Green had threatened to kill Lockhart more than once.

A date will be scheduled in Mahoning County Common Pleas Court for Green to answer the latest charges.
