An elderly woman was nearly struck by a train in Girard Monday evening according to a report from Girard Police.

Police were dispatched to the railroad tracks on the 700 Block of Dot Street around 8:45 p.m. in reference to a train that had deployed its emergency brakes. Police say the train was able to come to a complete stop just a few feet away from a black Honda CRV sitting on the tracks.

Police located the vehicle on the tracks and found an 80-year-old woman inside the vehicle, who police say was confused and unaware that a train had stopped in front of her.

Police identified the woman as a resident of Tuscarawas County, Ohio, which is nearly 88 miles away from Girard.

Police also located a phone in the passenger seat with several missed calls from a phone number later identified as the number of the woman's nephew. Police say the woman's nephew plans on making a trip to the hospital to see her as he is her only family.

The woman was taken to the hospital with no injuries, but police say she seemed to be confused as to where she was or how she got there.

Police say the woman's car had suffered extensive damage to the motor and tires and was towed away from the scene.
