1998: Youngstown State University President Leslie Cochran announces that a three-year fund-raising campaign has exceeded its $22 million goal by more than $1 million.

Youngstown Mayor George McKelvey says he wants the state auditor's office to determine if retiring Police Chief Randall Wellington is entitled to a $52,817 separation payment and Fire Chief Hector Colon a $33,352 payout. 

U.S. Sen. John Glenn, D-Ohio, who was the first American to orbit the earth more than 35 years ago, will return to space as a biological test subject on an upcoming shuttle flight. 

1983: A small industrial park at the former FitzSimmons Steel Co. warehouse on Wilson Avenue already has five tenants employing 60 to 70 people. 

The Warren area Jaycees marks 50 years of being "young men of action" helping to improve their community. The organization will celebrate at the annual Bosses Night at the Avalon Inn. 

Richard A. Tyo of Canfield, a senior computer and electrical engineering student at the University of Cincinnati, created the computer system for a $3 million experiment that will be launched into space by NASA on January 25.  He has been working at NASA's Lewis Research Center in Cleveland as a cooperative education student. 

1973: Three Youngstown men, one of them a Wells Fargo guard, are wounded at the McGuffey Mall when a teenager the guard evicted from the mall returns with a gun and opens fire. 

The Mahoning National Bank buys the First Baptist Church at 16 W. Boardman Street for future expansion. 

1948: Youngstown Mayor Charles Henderson and Struthers Mayor Thomas Needham open discussions about a possible joint sewage control program that would clean up the Mahoning River. 

Ohio Edison Co. plans to boost its rates for providing steam heat to many downtown Youngstown office buildings.
