Girard swears in newest police officer, honors others for service

Girard officially welcomed its newest police officer in a ceremony Friday afternoon.
Officer James Cerenelli, Jr. took the oath of office in front of family, friends and colleagues.
His brother, 21 News weekend anchor and forecaster Chris Cerenelli, then pinned James' service badge on his uniform.
James continues a family legacy of service in law enforcement, and their mom graduated from Girard High School.
Mayor Jim Melfi says the community is very proud of its police officers."
"The compliments we get about our police department are quite nice, so we're excited about adding quality individuals here," Melfi said.
Friday's ceremony also honored about a dozen Girard police veterans for their service, and demonstration of going above and beyond their duties.
Mayor Melfi says Girard PD is still looking to hire several more officers this year after losing several through retirement and leaving for other positions.
