With a big update expected Wednesday from Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell, the inflation fight continues. It's put a strain on millions of people across the country and here in the Valley.

That's why Alpha and Omega First Baptist Church in Youngstown gave away 150 bags of food to feed 450 people in their community.

"We've been doing it for 22 years and the need is great," said Gloria Drake, event organizer and long time member of the church.

The bags of food contained various meats, fruits and vegetables but were completely gone in just over two hours.

"It'll help out. It ain't gone be enough but it'll help out," said John Dozier, volunteer and long time church member. "It's important because we looking out for our neighbors," he said.

According to economic research by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the consumer price index for food increased 0.7 percent between September and October this year and food prices overall were nearly 11 percent higher than October last year.

Food prices are expected to grow more slowly in 2023, but still at above average rates.

People receiving food from church volunteers expressed gratitude.

"It's just a blessing and that's what Christmas is all about, it's about giving to others more than ourselves," said Lisa McKinney of Youngstown.

"Prices are really, really high now, so in a situation like this, it's really nice to be able to come to these giveaways and get some extra stuff that you need," said Maurice Harris of Youngstown.

Alpha and Omega First Baptist Church plans to do another giveaway next year.
