1997: With an 8-7 win in Cleveland, the Indians take three games to one lead over Baltimore in the American League Championship Series, one win away from a trip to the World Series.

Charles Mulinga, a native of Zambia now living in Fayetteville, Ark., and Karen Harvey of Ann Arbor, Mich., win their divisions in Youngstown's 21 st annual Peace Race 10-kilometer run.

Four additional FBI agents are expected to be assigned to the Mahoning Valley to continue the agency's investigation of organized crime. There will be 20 agents assigned to Mahoning, Trumbull, and Columbiana counties. 

1982: Meander Reservoir, Youngstown's main supply of drinking water, is at its lowest level in 11 years, but John Tucker, the chief engineer of the Mahoning Valley Sanitary District, says there is no cause for concern. 

An Alliance man who police say was shooting at pedestrians from a house at Broadway and Liberty Avenue is shot and killed by an Alliance police officer. 

Metropolitan Savings & Loan Co. is the first Youngstown financial institution to announce it is reducing its interest rates for home mortgages by a quarter of a percent -- to 13.75 percent for buyers with a 20 percent down payment. 

1972: New Castle, Pa., will hire seven new police officers, who will be paid from federal revenue-sharing funds.

Youngstown Bishop James W. Malone, who underwent surgery for abdominal cancer in St. Elizabeth Hospital, will be transferred to the Rozwell Park Institute in Buffalo, N.Y., for radiation treatments. 

The popular singing duo of Tony Sandler and Ralph Young delight an audience of 2,500 at the opening show of the Monday Musical Club's 76th season. 

1947: Speaking to about 2,600 people at Stambaugh Auditorium, the Rt. Rev. Msgr. Fulton J. Sheen, a noted Catholic radio orator, says that only God can provide the peace of mind that millions of Americans are trying to find through pills and alcohol. 

Youngstown parking lot owners have been boosting prices to discourage all-day parkers. Prices range from 20 cents an hour at choice lots to 15 cents a day at lots farther from the business district. 

Vienna volunteer firemen complain that Youngstown has not provided the equipment and materials necessary to fight fires at Youngstown Municipal Airport. They continue to respond to emergency calls at the airport, although it is not township property.
