1997: Youngstown State University reports a 3.7 percent drop in enrollment in the past year to 12,324. In 1990, enrollment was 15,454.
The Rev. Wendell Anthony, the pastor of Fellowship Chapel in Detroit, tells the annual Freedom Fund banquet of the Youngstown NAACP that "we who have the most to gain and the most to lose" must remain unified and supportive of the NAACP.
Stoneridge, the Warren manufacturer of electrical components for the automotive industry, will offer 5.8 million shares of stock, hoping to raise $102 million.
1982: Officials of Trumbull County United Way express concern that pledges are not being received at a rate that will meet the $2.4 million goal by the end of the month.
An early Sunday raid at the home of a part-time Rayen School teacher results in the confiscation of marijuana, cocaine, and hashish from a Coronado Avenue home.
During a campaign trip to Youngstown supporting congressional candidate George Tablack, U.S. Sen. Edward Kennedy, D-Mass., made a stop at the Warner Road home of J.J. Cafaro, met with supporters, and picked up contributions to the Fund for Democratic Majority.
1972: Mahoning County commissioners file a $508,000 lawsuit against a Brookfield trucking firm in an effort to seek payment for the replacement of the Credit Mobilier Bridge, which collapsed in June.
The Mahoning County Board of Elections reports 155,000 registered voters for the November election, the highest in history.
Three livestock barns at the Ohio State Fairgrounds in Columbus are destroyed in a fire in which three heads of cattle were killed, and 12 people were injured. Damage is estimated at $4 million.
1947: Youngstown Bishop James McFadden urges Catholics to make a "generous contribution" to the 29th annual Community Chest campaign.
Republican candidates and committeemen endorse the veterans' bonus on the November ballot, a bond issue to support a memorial civic center and stadium, and the Mill Creek Park levy.
The Civic Aeronautics Board rejects applications by Eastern Airlines to provide additional service at the Youngstown Municipal Airport.
