Warren establishes fund for pending opioid settlement money
Warren city council voted Wednesday to establish a fund to hold its share of millions of dollars from a statewide settlement.
The settlement, reached by the state with major drug makers last year, sets aside $808 million based on claims those companies fueled the opioid crisis.
Some Ohio counties have already gotten some of that money. Trumbull County will get about $350 million, but so far Warren city leaders don’t know how much the city will get.
They did tell 21 News they're starting to narrow down ideas of what that money will go toward.
"There’s some different categories where it could be used," said city auditor Vince Flask. "That will all have to go in front of city council to make that decision."
It’s also not clear when the city will be getting that money. Ohio is tied up in litigation with at least one of those drug makers, which could take weeks or months to resolve. There are also no emergency stipulations attached to the settlement money like there were with federal COVID relief money.
