Bill that could restore Delphi pensions blocked during U.S. Senate vote

Ohio's U.S. Senators Sherrod Brown and Rob Portman took to the Senate floor to ask for unanimous consent to pass the the Susan Muffley Act and send it to the President's desk.

The bipartisan Susan Muffley Act would restore pensions for 20,000 Delphi Salaried Retirees, with nearly 5,000 of those retirees in Ohio.

However, the bill received an objection, so it could not be passed.

Both Senator Brown and Senator Portman spoke in support of the bill, saying these people had earned their pensions, but still had them stripped away when GM filed for bankruptcy in 2009.

"I know what it means to a community that's struggling like the Mahoning Valley and Miami Valley," said Senator Brown. "Those two communities, they have hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of these retirees. When their pension shrinks like this, it affects their buying power, affects their standard of living, and it affects the prosperity of the community. So we will be back together working on this."

The bill will now have to be reworked in some form until it can be presented again.
