1997: Salem firefighters will not march in the city's giant Jubilee parade because parade organizers refused a request by Chief Dwight Stacy that his men and trucks be placed at the head of the parade so that they could respond if an emergency call came in. 
 
The Rev. Lonnie Simon and Atty. Percy Squires is chairing a committee of community leaders to discuss how area blacks can mobilize to bring about changes in local institutions.  
 
A Jackson Center man is in satisfactory condition in United Community Hospital in Grove City, Pa., after being wounded during a confrontation with borough Police Chief Frank Detelich, who was treated for injuries suffered in a scuffle.   
 
1982: As the result of a depressed market for tubular goods, Jones & Laughlin Steel Corp. is "stretching out" its $60 million modernization of the seamless pipe mill at the Campbell Works. 
 
More than 400 bicycling enthusiasts from across the nation are in Youngstown for the eighth annual 21-mile Mill Creek Tour. Some also took a 60-mile ride through the Berlin, Milton, and Meander areas. 
 
Auto enthusiast, Don Mizner of South Pymatuning Township, Pa., has found what may be the only existing Ritz, a two-seat roadster made in Sharon in 1914 and 1915. The cars sold for $395, and only about a dozen were believed to have been built. Ironically, he found the car in a garage in Cincinnati, on Sharon Street. 
 
 
1972: Youngstown Sheet & Tube Co. is going along with the women's liberation movement, hiring three female laborers in the tube mill.
 
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has begun releasing about 900 million gallons of water per day from Berlin Reservoir, which will raise Lake Milton by about two feet above normal. Boaters are warned to watch out for debris that may be loosened by the exercise.
 
Salem Superintendent of Schools Robert Pond is given a 2.8 percent increase in his salary of $19,500.
 
1947: Ohio liquor salesmen "knowingly overstocked" the state's liquor department with $40 million worth of stock in the last three months of Gov. Lausche's term, leaving the state with several years' supply of some brands. 
 
A healthy baby girl is born to Mrs. Gus Gray of Niles, who had been blown out of her house when a tornado struck June 7.
 
Youngstown butchers predict area housewives will be paying $1 to $1.50 per pound for top beef in the near future, doubling the present price, which is already a record high.
