1997: Fourth graders in McDonald Schools in Trumbull County had the highest proficiency test scores in Mahoning, Trumbull, and Columbiana Counties, with 69 percent passing all five parts. Canfield was tops in sixth graders, with a 61 percent passage rate.
The Tod Steam Engine has been designated a historical landmark by the American Society of Mechanical Engineering. It is believed to be the largest steam engine in the United States at 260 tons and has been disassembled and put into storage in Girard until a place can be found for it.
The Youngstown Water Department turned off service to the home of Councilman Jerome McNally, who owes more than $1,000. McNally says the department has always treated him fairly and the same as any citizen.
1982: Warren City Council approves joining the Western Reserve Transit Authority, but Niles City Council rejects membership.
The French American Banking Co. files suit against a Warren man who disappeared after the bank erroneously deposited $773,795 into the man's Second National Bank account.
Lockley Manufacturing Co., founded in 1921 in New Castle, Pa., as a tool and die repair shop, has been sold to Entwistle Co. of Hudson, Mass. Lockley has about 65 employees on the payroll and another 20 on layoff.
1972: Four Struthers teenagers scramble into the Nebo Park ravine to save 8-year-old Philip Demock, who tumbled 400 feet down the ravine and landed in a stream. He's in guarded condition at South Side Hospital. Robert Horvath, Rick Pastell, Mark Maravich, and Joe Calbrette carried the boy out of the ravine and were met by freshman football coach Joseph Mogolich, who administered artificial respiration until an ambulance arrived.
Struthers traffic Patrolman James Visingardi, 21, who joined the force two months ago, is credited with saving the life of one-year-old Brian Gerst, who stopped breathing after a traffic accident involving the family car.
Trumbull County commissioners approve a resolution in support of a stub canal from Leavittsburg to the Ohio River.
1947: A $3,500 diamond brooch missing for a week turns up unwrapped in the mailbox of Mrs. M.J. Kocialek at 2367 Selma Ave. She had left it on a dress she sent to the dry cleaner on July 9.
Youngstown's three department stores -- Strouss-Hirshberg, Kline's, and McKelvey's -- hold their employee picnics on the same day but at different locations.
Four of 50 new buses ordered by the Youngstown Municipal Railway Co. go into operation on the Ford-Logan line.
