A former Mercer County man facing 385 counts of child pornography told police that boredom led him to download images and videos of nude children and children involved in sex acts.

Michael Jeffrey Hughes, 37, who currently lives in Pittsburgh, is scheduled to appear before a district magistrate in Grove City later this month for a hearing on the pornography charges, as well as two counts of criminal use of a communication facility.

An investigation that began in September with a tip from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, led the Pennsylvania State Police Northwest Computer Crime Taskforce to subpoena data from the KIK Messenger chat platform.

Police searched Hughes’ North Main Street apartment in Sandy Lake in January.

According to an affidavit, Hughes admitted owning child pornography, although he denied sexually assaulting any children or making any child pornography.

Police say Hughes’ laptop and phone held 383 videos and images of nude children and children involved in sex acts.

According to the affidavit, Hughes told police he went on KIK because he was bored and wanted to chat with others, claiming one of the people he met on KIK sent him a child porn video. From there, Hughes told Police he went down the "rabbit hole".

During his arraignment on Thursday bond was set at $50,000.
