Ohio Lt. Governor urges ‘update’ of school prayer policies following Supreme Court ruling

Only an hour after the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in favor of a Washington State school football coach who sought to kneel and pray after games, Ohio Lt. Governor Jon Husted issued a statement urging schools in the state to review their policies on prayer.
In a 6-to-3 ruling, the high court said that former Bremerton High School football coach Joseph Kennedy’s prayer on the field after games was protected by the First Amendment.
Saying that the court decision affirmed the rights of teachers, coaches, and school employees with respect to prayer, Husted’s statement encourages all Ohio School boards to immediately update their policies consistent with the ruling.
The Lt. Governor’s statement gave the boards no further guidance on what he means by updating policies.
The case challenged the justices to consider the issue of how to balance the religious and free speech rights of school employees with the rights of students not to feel pressured into taking part in religious practices.
