Man sentenced for police chase from Rootstown to Liberty Township
A Portage County man has been sentenced to one year in prison for leading deputies, police, and state troopers on a chase from Portage County and ended in Trumbull County.
Robert Ashley, 58, of Tallmadge, was sentenced this week in Portage County Common Pleas Court after pleading guilty to one count of failure to comply with the order of a police officer.
In late March, officers were sent to a gas station in Rootstown to investigate a report of a man passed out in a van at a gas pump for an hour-and-a-half.
The van sped away as officers arrived and led them and other agencies on a chase with speeds up to 90 miles per hour into Trumbull County.
The van’s speed slowed when its tires were flattened after running over spike strips placed on the road by police.
A half-hour after the pursuit began, the van stopped along southbound Route 11 near Girard Lake.
The driver was gone, so police searched on foot using a K-9 tracking dog and eventually arrested Ashley.
In August, Ashley pleaded guilty in Portage County to drug possession.
He was released from jail in January after completing a three-month sentence.
