Parent of murder victim speaks on latest homicide
Holding back tears, Lynnette Wesley says she's still grieving after her family was torn apart nearly two years ago, when her 19-year-old son Brandon Wesley, was shot and killed at Homestead Park.
"When you lose someone that you love, you don't know what they're taking from you," Wesley said.
This comes after another homicide Wednesday night, one that claimed the life of 16-year-old Isiah Walker, at the same location where Wesley was killed July 18, 2020.
Lynette tells 21 News when she learned of the news, it was an emotional trip down memory lane.
"My heart goes out to this family because I don't wish no one to go through this, it's been heartbreaking for me," she explained.
Lynette continues to hold city leaders and law enforcement officials accountable, in the hopes of finding her son's killer, while advocating for reform.
"Some of the ones that are committing the crimes, we need to change their mindset," Wesley says.
Acknowledging that some kids maybe set in their ways, but believes change can happen and needs to.
"For the younger ones that are coming up, we want to change them before they reach that same pattern of thinking," she added.
Also emphasizing for this to work, it has to start at home.
"Observe what your children are doing, if your children are carrying guns...it starts at home," Wesley explained.
Lynette agrees with the recent announcement of saturation patrols in areas of the city where crime is more frequent, but adds that people need to speak up when crime happens, while also feeling safe when coming forward.
