Superintendent: Leetonia cancels last day of class due to 'social media concern'
The last day of the school year for the 550 students in the Leetonia Village Exempted Schools was supposed to be Friday. However, as it turned out Thursday was the final day of class due to what superintendent Dennis Dunham characterized as a “social media concern”.
Not calling it a “threat”, the superintendent told 21 News that school officials became aware of rumors in the community after 7 a.m. Friday when students were already on buses going to school.
Without disclosing further information about the concern, Dunham said out of an abundance of caution, he decided to cancel Friday’s classes and bus the students back to their homes.
Parents have been notified through the school's “all-call” system, according to Dunham.
In addition, Dunham said police and the fire departments searched the building for any hazards.
Asked if he would have made the same decision to cancel classes if the school massacre in Uvalde, Texas hadn’t happened, the superintendent told 21 News there is a heightened awareness. “All events come into play,” said Dunham
A special Senior Class assembly that had been scheduled for Friday will be held Saturday morning, followed by commencement ceremonies that afternoon.
