The former superintendent of the Canfield Local School District has filed an objection to the dismissal of a lawsuit he filed against the city's police department and chief for defamation.

Magistrate James Melone issued a decision earlier this month finding that former superintendent Alex Geordan failed to present facts proving that Chief Charles Colucci and the department defamed him.

The lawsuit, filed in July 2020, alleges that the purpose of the alleged defamation was to force him out as superintendent.

The lawsuit also accused Colucci of trying to reduce the role of school officials in school-related disciplinary matters in order to give the Canfield Police Department the primary power and authority in handling school disciplinary issues.

Geordan's attorney alleged that Colucci, with the department's approval, mounted an attack on Geordan's job because Geordan resisted Colucci's alleged efforts to infringe upon school authority.

Geordan resigned as the school's superintendent in late 2019 after he came under scrutiny over what police characterized as a history of failing to report serious threats to law enforcement.

In his objection to the magistrate's decision, Geordan's attorney claimed that evidence to support his client's claims were included in an affidavit and that Melone either disregarded the affidavit or did not find the former superintendent's sworn statements to be credible.

Geordan is asking the the case be brought to trial.
