Trumbull County judge honored
Trumbull County judge Andrew Logan was honored by the Ohio Access to Justice Foundation.
Judge Logan received the Presidential Award for Pro Bono Service during the Ohio State Bar Association's annual meeting Tuesday, May 10.
The award highlights Judge Logan's lifetime efforts to make the courts more accessible, especially to people who can't afford an attorney or are facing legal hardship.
"Judge Logan is a shining example of someone who was in a position to do something to make our justice system more accessible and equitable, and who did it," said executive director of Community Legal Aid Steven McGarrity.
Legal Aid nominated Judge Logan for the award, after 15 years of collaboration between Legal Aid and the courts. Through the collaboration, a Legal Aid attorney was able to be onsite at the Trumbull County courthouse to help low income residents facing foreclosure.
Through Judge Logan's efforts, Trumbull County led the state of Ohio in the number of homes saved during the height of the foreclosure crisis following the Great Recession.
Judge Logan also led the establishment of the Clarence Darrow Court Clinic, which provides free legal help to low income residents facing housing or financial problems, including foreclosure, eviction and debt collection. The project is offered in partnership with Legal Aid and the Trumbull County Bar Association.
"We are so grateful to Judge Logan and his team at the Court," said Rachel Nader, Legal Aid's Advocacy Director. "We were thrilled to have this opportunity to recognize his contributions to our community."
