Ellsworth Township Trustees issued a Proclamation, making June 11, 2022 Zion Hensley Day.
The 12-year-old girl is the first female boxer from the Mahoning Valley to ever win a National Championship in boxing.
Zion has worked to achieve excellence in boxing, Brazilian Jiu-jitsu, wrestling, several other sports and academically.
Trustees Fred Houston, William Spellman, and Bob Toman issued the proclamation prior to their township meeting putting this recognition into
the permanent record.
Zion is also a Junior Olympics Gold Medal winner.
Township Trustees and her coaches talked about Zion's hard work, discipline, dedication and integrity that sets her apart.
The former World Middleweight Champion Kelly Pavlik is Zion's strength and conditioning coach said, "Zion has a work ethic next to none."
"Everything she chooses to do she goes at it 100% into it, and being able to work with her over the years, her progress has been amazing. She's young I like the idea of her being a kid too, let her play other stuff. She has done track and other sports, so that should also help keep Zion interested in boxing too. The better she gets the scarier it is," Pavlik said.
"She has the mindset of a champion, the heart of a champion and you've already seen that in the things she's accomplished. Zion is an extremely gifted and talented athlete. She also has the mental toughness. She has new goals and she's going to work to achieve those goals," said Jiu-Jitsu Coach James Terlecky.
"Zion has a willingness to learn. She began wrestling for the first time as a 6th grader, which is tough. Yet she qualified for our league championship. She doesn't stop, she doesn't break," said Coach Chris Wills.
Her principal told the crowd that Zion also excels academically and is humble and kind to everyone.
"It has been an honor to watch her grow. She has demonstrated hard work, perseverance and keeps her grades up. She has taken part in every service project to help others. Zion is friends with everyone," said Principal Debbie Farelli.
"I want to thank the Trustees. I want to thank all my coaches and trainers over the years for teaching me, believing in me and helping me grow. Without my family and God none of us would be here tonight. Thank you very much," Zion Hensley said.
