Former 21 Sports anchors go from studio to MLB broadcast booths
In any profession you always have to start somewhere.
For three former 21 WFMJ -TV sports anchors they started in downtown Youngstown and are now calling games for three major league franchises.
Joe Castiglione was a sports reporter in 1972. He then went to Cleveland and called the Indians and Cavalier games in 1979.
Since 1983 he's been a part of the broadcast teams for the Boston Red Sox.
Jack Corrigan was a weeknight sports anchor in the late 1970's. After leaving WFMJ, he called Cleveland Indian games for 18 years. Since 2002 he's been broadcasting Colorado Rockies games.
Greg Brown spent one year at 21 WFMJ in 1988. At that point he had to make a career decision.
"It was a great year for me there, and I had to make a difficult decision . Was I going to stay at WFMJ or was I going to move into broadcasting and go to the minor leagues in Buffalo, ' said Brown.
Brown has been calling Pittsburgh Pirate games since 1994 and still keeps in touch with the WFMJ connections.
"Joe Castiglione without fail comes up to me in Fort Myers during spring training, comes up behind me and says F-M-J , Youngstown. You, me and Corrigan."
Brown says it would be great to get a team photo of the three former 21 WFMJ sports guys.
"Its just not possible during spring training because the Rockies are in Arizona," said Brown.
Beside the three former sportscasters, the late Chuck Tanner, who managed the Pirates, Braves, Athletics and also did sports on 21 WFMJ from 1968-1970.
Tanner, who passed away on February 11, 2011 told 21 Sports in 2004.
'When I went to Chicago and they announced me as the manager, there were four newspapers and about 50 TV's from all across the state. I knew what they were doing on the other side of the camera."
"It's a small fraternity," said Brown, "and here are three, and if count Chuck four guys who wind up in baseball. Its pretty cool."
