A 55-year-old Warren man was sentenced in a Trumbull County court Monday after pleading guilty to charges of patient abuse.

Gregory Cornell will take part in community service, undergo random drug testing and a mental health evaluation. Cornell received no jail time when he pleaded guilty to harming a patient at a Trumbull County healthcare facility. The charge of patient abuse is a fourth degree felony.

A judge ruled that Cornell will not be allowed to work in the medical field or have his nursing license reinstated. Cornell will also be put on probation at his new residency in West Virginia.

Cornell put a pillow over a patient's face at an assisted living facility, according to Assistant Trumbull County Prosecutor Chuck Mortow. Another nurse reportedly stopped Cornell from causing additional harm to the patient. Officials say Cornell immediately turned over his nursing license.

A Trumbull County grand jury indicted Cornell last year, and said that the patient abuse took place around January 12, 2020.
