Utility crews work to restore power in the Valley
FirstEnergy crews continue to chip away at power outages scattered throughout the valley.
Outages in the four-county area that numbered 3,331 at 7:30 a.m. Friday had been whittled down to 1,828 by 11:30 a.m. That number has increased since our last check with an additional 97 outages reported throughout the area at 1 p.m.
With 1,202 homes and businesses in the dark by late morning, Mercer County had the largest number of outages. About 60% of French Creek Township residents were reported without power around 1 p.m.
FirstEnergy could not estimate when power would be restored in Mercer County.
As of the early afternoon, Columbiana and Mahoning counties are showing only a handful of outages. Columbiana has 36 outages while Mahoning has 53.
Trumbull County reported 10 outages as of 8:30 p.m.
Severe weather is being blamed for the problems. A layer of ice could be seen on trees and wires in parts of the valley and Mercer County.
All morning police and fire department dispatchers took reports of falling trees and branches that are blocking roads and downing power lines.
