Crews evacuating residents from fire at Brookfield apartment complex
The Brookfield Fire Department evacuated residents from an apartment complex that caught fire on Wednesday afternoon.
Reports said that multiple people called 911 around 1 p.m. about a structure fire at the Cocca Apartment complex on Nellie Street near Brookfield Avenue.
Crews said that the fire spread throughout the 12 units and impacted residents across various age groups. One of the units was destroyed in the fire, first responders said. They added that the other 11 apartments had suffered substantial smoke damage. All of the units were declared unlivable.
The American Red Cross was called to help assist residents relocate to temporary housing.
Firefighters said they knocked out the bulk of the fire and were able to control it before 1:30 p.m.
Residents were rushing to leave the building before five different fire departments arrived to assist them. Brookfield firefighters completed two searched inside the building to search for anyone inside after they received reports of possible entrapment.
Firefighters reported that a cat died inside one of the units.
The complex is a two-story family residential apartment building.
First responders have made contact with various utility companies to shut off resource supply such as power and water to the apartment.
