City of Youngstown will apply for $10 million grant to 'build up' Lake McKelvey
Lake McKelvey may soon become a top destination for park lovers after Youngstown City Council voted unanimously on Wednesday night to approve the request made by the city's Parks and Recreation department to apply for a $10 million grant.
The grant would require the City of Youngstown to provide a match of up to $2 million for the project.
Parks and Recreation Director Dawn Turnage told 21 WFMJ that the money would help build up Lake McKelvey into a destination for fishing, boating, camping, and more.
The first year would require assessing environmental factors and zoning to determine viable projects throughout the park
"When it comes to building a cottage community for example hiking, camping any thing in relation to outdoor sports and water we definitely would have a plan to build that out," Turnage said.
There is no word yet on when the city will begin applying for the grant, nor a timetable for additions to Lake McKelvey.
