Youngstown man accused of running light, charged with impersonating police officer
A man who Mill Creek Park Police says repeatedly told officers he was working undercover for the FBI spent the weekend in jail.
An officer says he began chasing a car that ran a red light Saturday, almost running into another car near Lanterman’s Mill on Canfield Road.
Police say when the car finally stopped outside a business past Bear’s Den Road, the driver refused the officer’s order to show his hands. Instead, he was reaching around the inside of the car.
The suspect initially refused to place his hands on the steering wheel of his car, saying he didn’t need to because he works for the FBI, according to the officer.
The suspect, identified as 53-year-old Kevin Neal of Youngstown, repeated the FBI claim two more times, saying he didn’t have an ID because he was working undercover.
Neal told the officer to call the FBI or U.S. Senator Rob Portman, who he also claimed to work for.
The officer learned from a dispatcher that there was a warrant for Neal’s arrest for aggravated trespass, and he should be considered armed and dangerous.
By now a second officer had arrived and handcuffed Neal.
Police say Neal denied having a firearm, but a search of his Pontiac turned up a 45-caliber handgun with a round in the chamber and seven rounds in the magazine.
Neal did not have a valid conceal carry permit, according to police.
In addition to the citation for running a red light, Neal is charged with impersonating a police officer, improperly handling a firearm in a motor vehicle, and having a weapon under a disability.
