A catholic church in Warren was damaged by a fire Sunday morning.

According to the release, a passerby noticed flames inside Blessed Sacrament Parish in Warren around 6 a.m. and called the fire department.

Warren firefighters responded and put the fire out before it could spread past the ambo area. The ambo area and liturgical books in that area were completely burnt but the fire did not spread.

While the fire was contained, the church was damaged by extensive smoke.

The fire appears to be accidental and is under investigation.

Morning masses scheduled for Blessed Sacrament were canceled and parishioners attended mass at St. James Church.

Blessed Sacrament is closed as of Sunday afternoon while clean-up and restoration work continues.

No one was injured in the fire and there was no significant damage to the building.
