Boardman woman accused of faking ATM robbery

A Boardman woman who claimed she'd been robbed at an ATM is now facing charges after police say she made the whole thing up.
Kimberley Armstrong told police she had withdrawn $400 from an ATM on Market Street just before 10 a.m. on Thursday.
Armstrong said she was knocked over by a man who came from behind and grabbed her cell phone case with the cash and pushed her down. Armstrong then reported that while the suspect fled he dropped her cell phone case nearby and took the cash.
The story began to raise suspicions with police, though, when an employee inside the store said they had not seen anyone who matched the description of the suspect and Armstrong said she would not be able to identify the person, claiming only to have seen him from behind.
An investigation into the robbery determined that there was no theft and Armstrong did not interact with anyone. Camera surveillance footage showed that she made it appear that she used an ATM and made an effort to simulate the appearance of having been robbed.
Armstrong has since turned herself into Boardman Police and has been charged with Making False Alarms and Obstructing Official Business. An investigation is continuing into the event and attempts by Armstrong to use the incident to solicit donations.
