The Jackson Township fire department said three horses died in three separate vehicular accidents after 12 horses escaped from a farm in Mahoning County around 8 p.m. Tuesday.

Two juveniles were injured in one of the vehicles that struck one of the horses. Troopers said that they are okay. Drivers of the other vehicles refused treatment at the scenes.

The horses died after being struck by drivers on Mahoning Avenue near Bailey Road in North Jackson. The other nine horses were wrangled by police.

"I believe some Mahoning Sheriff's, Jackson P.D., Milton P.D. as well as some state troopers, they were able to corral the horses into Carter Lumber," said Lt. Anthony Jones of North Jackson Fire Department. "They corralled them into the fence limits of that business and were able to have the owner of the horses come and transport them back to the farm."

The Jackson Township Fire Department said there were at least three separate accident scenes.

"Right in front of Macy's, there was another one in front of Jackson Milton School and one by Carter Lumber, all on Mahoning Avenue," said Mike Mortimer, EMS Battalion Chief for North Jackson.

The fire crew said they believe the herd of horses came from a farm on Duck Creek Road.
