Five high school football teams still contention for state championship
The quest for a state football championship continues this weekend with five teams in the viewing area still in contention to bring home a title.
Friday, three teams, Ursuline, Farrell and Grove City open up the weekend with Springfield and Warren JFK playing Saturday.
The Irish and Port Clinton play for the first time in school history at Euclid Community Stadium. The Irish are in the playoffs for the 22nd time, have a tournament record of 47-7 and have four state championships. Port Clinton is in the postseason for a fifth time and are 6-4 overall.
Springfield and Carey also play at Euclid. The Tigers are trying to reach the state championship game for a third consecutive year. Both the Tigers and Blue Devils are 13-1 and both have won 13 in a row following an opening week loss.
Kickoff Saturday is 7:00 pm.
In Division VII, Warren JFK and Newark Catholic meet for a second consecutive season. In 2020, the Eagles eliminated the Green Wave, 201-3.
Newark Catholic is in the playoffs for a state leading 38th time and have an overall record of 82-29. Contrary, the Eagles are 45-23 in their 26th year in the playoffs.
In Pennsylvania, in Class 2A, defending state champion Farrell plays Karns City on the Gremlins home turf, while in Class 3A, Grove City meets Martinsburg at Slippery Rock University.
Both games are Friday and kickoff at 7:00 pm.
