200 Youngstown families now have a free turkey this Thanksgiving after a Youngstown rapper decided to give back to his community.

Youngstown native Kashmere Womack, along with his family, gave out the hundreds of turkeys on the city's south side on Market Street Tuesday.

Womack said after losing his own brother to gun violence in the city in 2012, it pushed him to pursue music and keep going while also giving back.

"It made me more serious," he said, "It made me want to take it more serious and keep his name flowing and alive."

Womack added, "The guns and senseless violence, it can all come to a halt and we can do things like this, giving back to our community. We're just trying to give back in a positive way and give our blessings and bless folk."

His mother, Tina Womack, said she hopes Kashmere can inspire the younger generation to stay on the right path to help others.

"It's going to give kids time to look at a rapper and say, 'Look at what he's doing.' Rapping is not all about the craziness you see on TV. It's a bunch of props," she said, "I am very proud of him. He's come a long way. He's given out 200 turkeys, they're gone and we're proud."

Womack said he plans on doing another turkey giveaway next year, but with plans of making it a lot bigger.
