Over the weekend in Columbus, Governor Mike DeWine signed a new map of Congressional districts into law.
But Democrats and voting rights groups objected to the Republican-led mapmaking process, saying it's been unfair, partisan and cloaked in secrecy.
The new law will create three safe Democratic districts out of the 15 new U.S. House seats in the state.

The map will last four years instead of ten because of no Democratic support.

The area that used to be represented by Tim Ryan will now all be part of the 6th district.
That includes all of Mahoning and Trumbull Counties with cities like Youngstown and Warren.

Since Tim Ryan is running for Senate, he won't be running for the 6th district Congressional seat.
Assuming Bill Johnson seeks re-election of the 6th district in 2022, he will need to get votes of historically strong democrat voting cities like Youngstown and Warren.

But 21 News Analyst Bill Binning says he doesn't expect to see a lot of campaigning in those places by Johnson.

"I think what Johnson's campaign will try to do is run up the vote in more Republican areas rather than try to convert those Democrat areas," said Binning.

The 6th district spreads all the way down the Ohio River to Marietta.
And even though Mahoning and Trumbull are traditionally Democrat, analysts say the territory as a whole favors Republican. As a result you may not see a lot of democrats rushing to get into that race or have the DNC put a lot of their dollars behind it.

"It will be a pretty tough sell especially in 2022 where Republicans are expected to have the winds at their back with President Biden in office. There's always kind of a backlash with the ruling party plus with the challenges of inflation and things like that that are happening right now so it's going to be pretty tough sell," said statehouse reporter, Andrew Tobias, with Cleveland.com.

"More likely we're going to see a well-known Democrat from the valley but still the numbers of the district are Republican," added Binning.

A court challenge could potentially change this new map, otherwise the official representation will begin in January of 2023.
