PA lawmakers introduce recreational marijuana use bill
Two Pittsburgh area lawmakers are hoping to make Pennsylvania the 17th state to legalize adult-use recreational marijuana.
House Bill 2050 would make it legal for anyone 21 and over the buy and use recreational marijuana in the Keystone state.
The state reps that wrote the bill say it would bring in millions of dollars in tax revenue.
"60% of pennsylvanians believe the time is now to regulate the market," said State Representative Jake Wheatley.
Wheatley, along with fellow Rep. Dan Frankel introduced a bill to decriminalize adult-use of recreational marijuana.
"The fact of the matter is cannabis is here already. You talk about it coming in from other states it's here in the commonwealth anyway, it's unregulated. We don't know what our citizens are getting," said Wheatley.
Wheatley says unregulated, illegal product coming into the state can be dangerous to the user. He predicts a legal market here would bring in between $180-350 million annually. Income he says the state desperately needs.
"The majority of the money would go into the general fund to continue to help in state direction of roads and bridges, our school systems and a number of other things," added Wheatley.
That includes a portion to go to grant programs to help minority and women-owned small businesses as well as a rehabilitation program for drug addiction.
House Bill 2050 would also wipe clean the records of non-violent cannabis-related offenders, in some cases freeing people from prison and giving them back driving licenses.
This is the third attempt to bring such a bill forward in the state house. Wheatley hopes the we are at a time when republicans are willing to finally bring to topic to hearings. Right now, none are scheduled.
