No matter what your age, it's always a blast checking out the hundreds of pumpkins displayed at the Canfield Fair's infamous pumpkin building.

The event that always brings in the crowd is the biggest pumpkin contest that takes place earlier in the week.

"There are some big farmers that enter every year and there is your average gardener who will grow a nice zucchini, think it's heavy and want to have it entered," said Linda Lanterman, Pumpkin Building Superintendent.

There is also a junior pumpkin fair for kids to participate in.

This year's winning pumpkin came in at 1,337 pounds. The pumpkin's owners are Troy and Missy Haire. Jerry Rose's pumpkin came in second.

"I've won six times and it's just a very interesting hobby," Rose told 21 News. "You've never seen some of these pumpkins can grow 50 pounds a day."

Rose said he's been growing large pumpkins since the early 90s and actually chooses to compete his pumpkins in the Canfield Fair over his hometown fair in Geauga County.

One question he's asked a lot is: How do you move a pumpkin that size?

"When I was younger, I would get a bunch of buddies together, put it on a tarp and pick it up with a truck," Rose explained. "Now that we're older, we got smarter. I got a sling that drops down over the top of the pumpkin and I pick it up with a front end loader with a tractor. I put it on a palette, put it on a truck and then bring it here. Then they use tow motors to move it around the fair."

Not only did the winning pumpkin take first this year, but also set a new record.
