1996: About 150 students, parents, and grandparents attend a Youngstown Board of Education meeting and tell the board and the teachers union that they will not tolerate another strike that keeps schools from opening on time.
Delegates from the Mahoning and Shenango valleys attending the Republican National Convention in San Diego tell Vindicator politics writer Mark Niquette that they approve of the party's outreach to female voters, highlighted by the choice of U.S. Rep. Susan Molinari as keynote speaker.
Lance Cpl. Roy D. Little Jr., 22, a 1993 graduate of Niles McKinley High School, is killed when a Humvee he was riding in overturned on a remote dirt road on a Marine base in California.
1981: William J. Brown, 68, publisher of the Vindicator since the death of his uncle, William F. Maag Jr., in 1968 and president of WFMJ Broadcasting Co., dies in North Side Hospital where he was undergoing cardiovascular tests. He was active in civic and business affairs throughout his career and was one of the original trustees of Youngstown State University and was a long-time trustee of the Reuben McMillan Free Library.
Youngstown public and parochial school students will again ride Western Reserve Transit Authority buses this fall, but only for as long as the WRTA's money holds out.
Trumbull County Deputy Daniel D'Annunzio is wounded in the upper leg while investigating a reported burglary at 124 Russell St., Niles.
1971: Rock music, ice cream, hot dogs, and pop are on the menu for a rock concert being advertised for a 200-acre farm in Milton Township on Aug. l8. The event would benefit St. Jude Hospital and is expected to attract 7,000 people.
Parents and friends of four Kent State University students killed on campus in 1970 react with anger to the Justice Department's decision not to convene a grand jury probe of the shootings.
