Ursuline graduate Paul Maguire stops in the valley
Ursuline legend Paul Maguire made a pit stop at Scacchetti's Italian Steakhouse Thursday night, three days before the 2021 NFL Hall of Fame enshrinement ceremony in Canton. That's where he'll watch is his friend Tom Flores, a member of the this year's class, be inducted.
"It's been a longtime for him to be waiting and it's the most fantastic day for us.", said Maguire
The two share a lot of history, being 2 of only 20 players who played in the American Football League for its entire 10-year existence.
"He was with the Raiders and I was with the Chargers, and in those days there were only eight teams. We played twice a year, so we all became friends.", Maguire added
Maguire, a Youngstown native, played his high school football on the North Side at Ursuline, before attending the Citadel to play college football. In 1959, he led the nation in receiving touchdowns.
Maguire was a member of the inaugural AFL draft class in 1960, being selected by the Los Angeles Chargers, and also played for the Buffalo Bills. He appeared in six of the AFL's 10 championship game. He'd go on to the broadcast booth for 46 years.
On the other hand, Flores's journey also took him through the AFL where he played for the Bills and Raiders, and is the fifth leading passer in AFL history. He also coached in the NFL, leading the Raiders to Super Bowl wins in 1980 and 1983.
