Veteran football coach Bill Bohren has seen a lot of football in his 56 years of coaching.

As a head coach he's seen a lot of players come and go!

But at age 87, Bohren shows no signs of slowing down.  As a matter of fact he's beginning his first season as the head coach at Mathews.

"Friday night's, I enjoy Friday night's as a player and I sure enjoy it as a coach, " said Bohren before running practice with his 30 players at Mathews.

Bohren has been a  head coach at six area schools including the Mustangs, LaBrae, Chalker, Niles, Lakeview and Boardman.

He also ran programs at Butler (Pa.) , Ottawa - Glandorf and Steubenville.

In 1987, he took Boardman to the State Championship game and lost to Cincinnati Princeton.

Bohren says football is the greatest game out there.

"Who wouldn't want to be involved in football."

Bohren has 295 career wins and credits those to his former players.

"I've always been surrounded by great kids and I've been fortunate to be at programs where we had the kids and you can't win without them."

Prior to taking the Mathews job he was an assistant with Niles for three seasons, but wanted to get back as a head coach to reach 300 wins.

"When your an assistant coach you got to keep your mouth shut and not second guess the head coach, so now that I'm a head coach, my assistants can second guess me."

Over the years the veteran coach has had some memorable quotes at his various stops:

"One day they'll name a street after you and the next day they'll chase you down it.

Or:

Reporter: Coming off a 2-8 season and with six players back, do you feel good about your team this year??

Bohren:  Feel good about them!! They were 2-8 last year , why would I want them back!!!

While most 87 year old's are enjoying their lives, Bohren wants to coach football as long as he can.

"It just shows I have a good diet and I've lived long enough."

Bohren is the oldest coach in Ohio and could be the oldest active coach in the United States  21 Sports researched and found no other coaches older the Bohren.

He also could be the oldest active coach in any sport.
