The Poland Historical Society placed a new historical marker for the South Main Street Historic District.

The South Main Street District was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974, but there had been no marker to recognize that until today.

Officials held a dedication for the new marker Tuesday evening.

David Smith, a trustee for the Poland Historical Society, says the sign is important for the community.

"History is one of the best things Poland has going for it, and we would like to preserve that history by putting up these hopefully somewhat permanent markers that will be here in many years to come for residents to enjoy," said Smith

Officials there also gave a walking tour of the area so people could learn more about the town's history.
