People who planned to do business at government offices in Ohio on Friday may have to wait until next week.

Governor Mike DeWine announced that the state will join the federal government in closing most state offices and giving most state employees the day off today in observance of the newly-created Juneteenth federal holiday. Exceptions are hospitals and public safety.

President Biden signed the declaration on Thursday commemorating the ending of slavery in the United States.

"Because Juneteenth falls on a Saturday, this makes the previous business day, Friday, June 18th, the day the state holiday is commemorated," said DeWine.

DeWine says he supports legislative efforts to commemorate the holiday as well.
