Three employees of the East Liverpool police department are redefining what it means to go above and beyond the call of duty.

City Police Captain Chad Tatgenhorst has penned a letter commending the actions of Patrolmen Jake Talbott and Jon Kerchoffer, as well as Dispatcher Andrea Hoffman.

According to Captain Tatgenhorst, a woman and her three children were left out in the rain at 1 a.m. Saturday after being kicked out of their home.

Patrolman Talbott took the displaced family to a hospital for temporary shelter.

Dispatcher Hoffman gave Talbott money to buy food for the mother and her children.

Talbott also went home and collected clothing and toys from his own children and brought them to the family.

During that time, Dispatcher Hoffman was making phone calls looking for a place for the family to stay that night.

After having no luck finding lodging for the four,  Patrolman Jon Kerchoffer spent his own money to put up the mother and children in a Calcutta hotel.

“I probably don’t say nearly enough how appreciative I am of the crew I work with, but let me just say that the teamwork, care and compassion, each of you showed on this night makes me very proud of all of you,” writes Captain Tatgenhorst. “Your actions during this incident are the epitome of human kindness and your selfless acts are an example for all of us. I appreciate everything you do.”

Copies of the letter were sent to both Talbott, Kerchoffer, and Hoffman, as well as Police Chief John Lane, Mayor Greg Bricker, and Safety Service Director Dave Dawson.
