Cleveland Mayor Frank G. Jackson announced on Monday that he will retire at the end of his fourth term.

“For over 31 years, from being a city councilman of Ward 5, to being council president and now mayor, you, the people of the city of Cleveland have worked alongside me for change and to create a better quality of life for all of our citizens,” said Mayor Jackson.

As Cleveland’s longest-serving mayor, Jackson held office during the Republican National Convention in 2016 to national sporting events like the MLB All-Star Game and NFL Draft.

Jackson began his career in elected office first as a city councilman, becoming city council president before being elected as mayor in 2006.
